Just last week, Deep Purple was forced to cancel two October shows in Germany at the tail end of their tour due to a medical emergency involving frontman Ian Gillan. Today, as Blabbermouth reports, the 81-year-old singer has had good news to share fans, revealing he had successfully underwent a procedure yesterday, November 6th, and is now resting before he can hit the road once more. “Dear friends,” Gillan wrote in a social media post, “I had a procedure yesterday which was successful. I now have to rest, in order to make a complete recovery and ensure that I’m as fit as can be before getting back to work. Thanks everybody for your patience and understanding. I really do appreciate it and apologise for all the inconvenience. Cheers, IG.”
The medical concerns forced the band to halt many planned shows. Alongside the two last-minute cancelations in Germany were another two shows in the country, as well as gigs across the Netherlands, four stops in France and five in the U.K. including the November 25th finale to their European tour. Neither Gillan nor the band have given further information on the procedure or the reasoning behind it. The band has also yet to make any statements about future coming shows, including a six-stop tour series across Latin America still set for early December. While Gillan has previously expressed uncertainties of how long the band can continue performing, many members of the band have previously spoken about their intentions to keep going until they can’t anymore, rather than run a “final gig.”
