At 8:00 pm, TiaCorine opened the “Distracted AF Tour”. She is a rapper and songwriter from North Carolina best known for her two singles “Lotto” and “FreakyT”. She was wearing a ripped white shirt and jeans with red embellishments on them. She had a DJ in the back playing her tracks, while she rapped over them. She smiled all the way through her set, showing how much fun she was having opening for Thundercat. Highlights include: “luv me”, “Backyard” and “ATE”. She started off the night with great and electric energy.
Around 9:00 pm, the lights go down, and Thundercat’s band enters the stage. His drummer, Ronald Bruner Jr., wearing a disco ball helmet, starts playing a fast-paced and impressive drum sequence. Three other band members come on stage: a keyboardist and two vocalists. The set design is a huge blowup sphinx colored black and red, which lit up to the sound of the music. Thundercat enters, wearing a black trench coat, a fur hat with a fox tail and, of course, his iconic black 6-string bass with “The Crow” (film) main character painted on the back, which he later displayed to the audience. He opens with a jam song called “Children of the Baked Potato”. It has minimal lyrics and is mostly focused on the instrumental elements, like the drums. The next track is called “Candlelight”, which features one of the backup vocalists. She comes closer on stage and begins to jump around and sing her feature on the song. She brought great energy that really impacted the crowd in a lively way. Many audience members are wearing cat ears and cat costumes, which makes sense considering the vocalist is very feline-heavy. The crowd is mostly 21- 30-year-olds. The show does have many empty seats, the most populated spot being the GA pit. He introduces the next track by saying, “Who wants to hear a song about failed relationships!” He laughs, and the crowd roars and laughs along with him. The main focus of the show is Thundercats bass skills. His effortless playing along with hypnotic, smooth vocals creates an ambiance that’s far from mediocre. The next track “She Knows Too Much” features a guest trumpet player named Mobetta Brown. The trumpet’s performance was electric. The crowd went wild for Mobetta. Thundercat thanked Mobetta before moving on to the next track. Between tracks, the drummer, Ronald, would play funny sounds on the soundboard as Thundercat was speaking to the crowd. Another track he introduced was “I Wish I Didn’t Waste Your Time”. He explained this song is about getting caught cheating on multiple partners, which got mixed reactions from the crowd. Other highlights include “Dragonball Durag”, “Pozole” and “Funny Thing”. The track that got the most attention was “Them Changes”. This song has over 500 million streams on Spotify, and displays his bass skills. The crowd knew all of the words. He exited the stage before coming back for the encore, in which he played “Show You The Way”, “A Fan’s Mail” and “Friend Zone”. The setlist was a perfect mix of his new record “Distracted” and fan favorites. He thanked the crowd and Brooklyn as a whole for coming out tonight and jamming with him. This show was very overstimulating due to the heavy jamming between songs and the light show. This venue was a strange pick considering it’s an art deco-era movie theatre converted into a concert venue; however, Thundercat made it work.
