Heavy metal act Bad Wolves are the latest in the music world to pay tribute to the late, great Dolly Parton following her passing in August, releasing a cover of her iconic track “Jolene.” Their release, however, marks a special tribute as this version of the heavy metal take on the track features vocals from Parton herself, recorded prior to her passing. The release also came with a music video, which can be found on Better Noise Music and Bad Wolves’ YouTube channel.
The new release comes with the support and approval of Dolly Parton’s Estate, and follows a previously released version in August. The cover expectedly puts a heavy metal spin on the classic track. with Bad Wolves vocalist Sara Skinner occasionally joined by Parton to duet across the track. The video features footage of Bad Wolves performing the track in the studio, alongside archive footage of Parton performing for her parts. Proceeds from the song will be donated to Dolly Parton’s “Imagination Library.”
The initial release of this cover was a source of controversy; the band had recorded and sent their take on the song to Parton in August, requesting her to appear on it. Parton reportedly loved the cover and agreed to appear before her untimely passing, which lead to the band to change plans. The track was released on August 31st, with proceeds also donated to Imagination Library. The band, however, reportedly had wished against releasing the track so early, with guitarist AJ Rebollo departing the band on August 28th citing the label pushing forward and neglecting the band’s wishes, feeling the release would be interpreted as capitalizing on her passing.
