According to Stereogum.com, DIIV performed at Balaclava Fest in São Paulo, Brazil. They played some new songs off their forthcoming A. G. Cook-produced album, ZIRP!, coming out next month and they also covered an entirely different cover of Charli XCX’s “Playboy Bunny.” DIIV’s set featured live debuts for released singles “The Fountain” and “Kid.” It also had live debuts for unreleased songs “Dare Me,” “My Star,” and “Trillions.” Then, there was their take on one of the B-sides from Charli’s Music, Fashion, Film, which they turned swirly and electrifying.
According to undertheradarmag.com, before the performance three weeks ago, DIIV dropped the music video for “Kid.” Jaxon Whittington directed the “Kid” video, which was filmed by vocalist Zachary Cole Smith’s son Roy and his friend Julian. As for the album, Cook said: “It was in the spirit of destroying and rebuilding their demos, Screamadelica-style, into a finished product, but that hybrid, half-remix approach felt completely wrong to me.”
The artist adds: “I became a bit obsessed with their live sound, and insisted on recording live drums before most of the songs were even finished. We spent a lot of time recording intricate guitar parts with specific guitar pedals, and as little time as possible doing anything on a computer, at least by my standards. After a few rounds of that, ZIRP! emerged as a concept, and a sort of utopian, dystopian mantra. For me it became a vehicle to push the band into new territory.”
