Turnover brings the tour for their new album, Down On Earth, to Brooklyn Paramount on December 2nd with support from shoegaze revivalists Nothing and trauma ray.
Formed in Virginia Beach in 2009 by brothers Austin (vocals, guitar) and Casey Getz (drums) and childhood friend Danny Dempsey (bass), Turnover burst onto the scene with their 2011 self-titled EP, showcasing an explosive pop-punk sound from the get filled with monster riffs, thundering double-time drums, and nearly-screamed vocals. Soon after, the band signed to legendary independent label Run For Cover Records and released a split EP with labelmates and emo game-changers Citizen in 2012. A year later, Turnover released their debut album, Magnolia, which was produced by Will Yip (Circa Survive, Title Fight, etc.) that rocked with much of the same energy of their first two EPs, this time with a more polished, emo-inspired sound with moody vocals, melodic riffs, and poignant lyrics.
In 2015, Turnover did the unexpected, they transitioned to indie-rock. The band released their sophomore album, Peripheral Vision, which dropped the hard-hitting punk elements of their previous releases for a refreshing blend of hazy dream pop and delicate emo rock that demonstrated a new calmer, more subdued approach to songwriting on tracks like “Hello Euphoria” and “Like Slow Disappearing,” while retaining visages of the band’s earlier, heavier sound on “Cutting My Fingers Off” and “Take My Head.” Beloved for its ethereal tone, lush-guitar layers, and haunting, confessional lyrics, the album received high praise for its natural-feeling stylistic shift and reached No. 4 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart. Turnover completed their maturation into sophisticated indie-rock stars on 2017’s Good Nature, which featured bright, jangly guitars, fuzzy harmonies, and otherworldly ambience with a consistent synth drone serving as the transition between most tracks. The band further expanded their sonic palette on their following two albums, 2019’s Altogether, which added further instrumentation including trumpet, saxophone, bongos, and tambourine, and 2022’s Myself in the Way, which ventured into electronics with more involved synths and the autotuned vocals. The latter also included features from Brendan Yates on the infectiously dancy title-track and Bre Morell on the string-laden “Ain’t Love Heavy” and saw the induction of touring guitarist, Nick Rayfield, as a full-time member of the band.
In May 2026, Turnover self-released their first fully-independent album, Down On Earth, which leans back into the more driving sound of their first indie-rock album eleven years ago. The album’s heaviest moments come on “Little Bees Don’t Bite,” which embraces a mix of fast paced surf and garage rock with a dizzying field of distortion that flits around the entire track and “I See You And Realize,” which pushes forward with influences from bands like the Cure complete with Robert Smith-like vocals, while “Wheelie For No One” and “Nightjar” encourage you move to move with a groovy dance-rock charm, and the beautifully somber “My Hand Is A Curtain” embraces the band’s more tender side. While the band has almost completely dropped their original punk songs from their performances, those early inspirations can be seen behind the scenes of their new direction and in their extremely ethereal, incredibly vibey concerts filled with atmospheric sonics, soaring vocals, and an uplifting mix of groovy dance music, synth transitions, massive sing-along choruses, and driving, bass-powered indie-rock.
