Mike D Shares Dynamic New Single “Make It Stop”

Mike D is officially entering a new era. Today, August 28, Mike D 5D releases his debut album, Thank You, via Capitol Records, bringing months of anticipation, new singles, and live performances together in one 13-track project. Along with the album, “Make It Stop” is out now, giving fans another taste of the strange, genre-blurring sound Mike D has been building toward. “Make It Stop” is one of the tracks that shows off just how far Mike D is willing to move outside the sound most people associate with him. Rather than trying to recreate the Beastie Boys formula, Thank You lets Mike D’s unmistakable voice sit atop constantly shifting production, creating what the announcement describes as an “aural playground.”

Previous singles have already hinted at the album’s range. “Crypto” was described by The New York Times as a “searing, lo-fi blast” of analog synths and industrial beats, while “Switch Up” has been praised as a genre-defying banger. “Make It Stop” fits naturally into that collection while still feeling like its own thing. There’s also a pretty exciting live component to this new chapter. The Mike D 5D touring band features Mike’s sons, Skyler and Davis Diamond, alongside Eddie Ruscha, Will Graefe and Milo Ruscha. After months of anticipation, the group is finally taking Thank You on the road.

There’s obviously a lot of history behind the name Mike D. But Thank You doesn’t seem interested in simply looking backward. The Associated Press called the album “refreshingly inventive,” praising the drive behind creating something so new and far removed from what listeners might expect. That feels like the most important thing to understand about this project: Thank You isn’t really about recreating an old sound. It’s about seeing what Mike D can do with it now. It’s familiar enough to remind you who’s behind it, but different enough to make you wonder where the project is going next. For now, though, the new album is here and “Make It Stop” is another glimpse into what Mike D sounds like when he isn’t worried about fitting into anyone else’s expectations.
