THAO has released her newest single “Catch as Catch Can” off of her upcoming album Show Me, which will be released on October 30 via Kill Rock Stars. The song features indie-rock singer-songwriter Neko Case, who THAO has opened for on various occasions throughout her career. THAO is a long-time admirer of Case, having always been inspired by her music and stating, “When I first heard her majestic voice on this song I teared up.” The song’s inspiration, which THAO described as “the (hot!) image of bodies surrendering to each other in the ocean, bodies surrendering to the animal in one another, a remote lighthouse, the doorway of a cottage by a virulent sea,” is apparent in the song’s official visualizer. Throughout the video, a triptych displays THAO coolly wading through a body of water, occasionally strumming a guitar as she’s bracketed by videos of towering trees and water lapping around her, a leaf floating gently in the middle. These visuals reflect the song’s sinuous melody and brazen lyrics, which are accompanied by THAO and Case’s smooth, layered vocals. 

Described as “A suite of lush, lovingly crafted and powerfully voiced songs that act as portals into THAO’s kaleidoscopic inner life,” Show Me will be THAO’s first album in six years. The album will feature several artists, including Tune-Yards, The Linda Lindas, and Adrian Quesada (Black Pumas). Two singles have already been released prior to “Catch as Catch Can,” titled “Fossils” and “Sick of the Times,” respectively. According to THAO, “This album is a real-time record-keeping of [her] life evolving into a different relationship with love and desire over the last few years,” including songs about topics such as sex and THAO’s queer identity. This evolution has included a transition between stage names, with the artist exchanging her long-time band name Thao and the Get Down Stay Down for THAO. Besides working on Show Me, THAO’s recent projects include guest-hosting the iconic Song Exploder podcast and hosting the PBS TV show Southern Storytellers.
