Rock band Soundgarden is set to perform at the upcoming NFL season-opener halftime show. Since the tragic death of frontman Chris Cornell in 2017 and some legal back-and-forth with Cornell’s widow, Vicky, live performances from the band have become scarce. However, they settled their legal disputes with Vicky in 2023 and also performed last year during their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, according to Stereogum. Now, they’re reuniting once again.
With their hometown team, the Seattle Seahawks, set to open the 2026 NFL season against the New England Patriots, a Soundgarden performance is quite fitting. The band won’t be alone; Pretty Reckless leader Taylor Momsen and Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready will join them. The two performed with Soundgarden last year for a rendition of the band’s “Rusty Cage” at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction.
The season opener is scheduled for September 9th and will air on NBC and be streamed on Peacock.
In other Soundgarden news, drummer Matt Cameron recently confirmed that the band’s final album is in the mixing stage. The album will reportedly have eight songs, all of which began development before Cornell’s passing in 2017. There is currently no confirmed release date.
