Rise Against Drops New Music Video for “Katy Bar The Door”

The punk rock band Rise Against released a new single, “Katy Bar The Door,” last week, with the official visualizer dropping yesterday (August 21st). The song’s title comes from an old saying that reportedly means “trouble is coming and that all hell is about to break loose,” as detailed in a press release.

“I don’t know where I came across this expression, but I immediately was taken with it,” Tim McIlrath, the song’s vocalist, said. “While an obscure reference now… I liked the idea of resurrecting it for this song, and that it sort of fits what it feels like to be alive in 2026.”

“Katy Bar The Door” is an impassioned, anthemic song that looks at how systems of power continue to marginalize and subdue their citizens, and what it feels like to watch it all go down. McIlrath sings verses like “Never learning for centuries of our mistakes/Does history rewind or does it repeat?/When good men comply and do nothing” and “A generation tricked into fighting each other/In this race to the bottom, we push and shove the whole way.” The energetic instrumentation behind his vocals, from the loud electric guitar to the drums, all represent the frustration and grief that comes with both living through and observing the atrocities of today.

The song was written about the violent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Minneapolis, resulting in the murder of two civilians and the forceful detainment of thousands of others. McIlrath saw them as a part of a larger picture. “This is not the first time in history we have reckoned with abuses of power,” he said. “Bearing witness to the fragility of democracy is a scary thing, and it demands a response.”
