Apple Music Will Start Labeling AI-Generated Music

With the rise of generative AI over the years, several music streaming platforms have developed policies in response to AI-generated music. One of these platforms is Apple Music. In an email sent out Thursday (August 20th), the streaming service announced that any such music would receive AI labels. The specific date this feature will be added wasn’t shared, but the emails did confirm it would happen “later this year,” as reported by Stereogum.

The upcoming feature will require content providers – including record labels and independent artists – to include AI Transparency Tags in circumstances where “AI was used to create a material portion of the content, including tracks that are AI platform generated,” as stated in the email. The company went on to elaborate that they define “AI platform generated” as anything mainly made by a generative AI service.

Other platforms such as Deezer and Tidal have already implemented similar labelling systems for AI music. Bandcamp and Qobuz have banned it completely from their platforms. Beatport recently announced that fully AI-generated songs would be banned from their service while AI-assisted music would be labelled. Only time will tell how AI-generated music will shift the policies our everyday music streaming services put in place and how we consume music as a whole.
