mxdwn Premiere: CA In LA Share Introspective New Single “Waking Up”

Los Angeles-based rising stars CA In LA have returned with an introspective new single “Waking Up.” The track is lyrically poignant in its reflection on alcohol dependency and other harmful behaviors. There’s a level of clarity that shines through in the vocal delivery as well as if the duo were taking a cold, hard look at themselves whilst crafting the song itself.

Speaking on the inspiration behind the track, the duo offered, “In the years of grinding it out in the artist struggle, we realized we had walked hand in hand with self-destruction. ‘Waking Up’ represents the moment we got honest with ourselves and knew things had to change. It was incredibly complicated to write this song, portraying what alcohol has done to us through lyrics and melody. We’re so proud we pushed ourselves to be better and create another evolution of the CA in LA soundscape.”

Fans of indie rock and dream pop will find much to enjoy within the song’s lush instrumentals, atmospheric arrangements and emotional embodiment in the lyrics and vocals. The melodies are as vulnerable as they are beautiful with a siren-like quality that keeps listeners coming back for more. As previously discussed, the lyricism is deeply resonant with lines that come across powerfully even in the quieter sonic moments. “Self-destruction isn’t beauty / This won’t be my fate / I choose to separate.”

“Waking Up” was written by Courtney Birk and Ashleigh Coffelt with the former on keys and the latter on guitar. The duo fleshed out the track with drums from Marc Nieto and bass by Jake Minter.
