Modest Mouse at The Rooftop at Pier 17 on October 8th

Modest Mouse brings the tour for their new album, An Eraser and a Maze, to The Rooftop at Pier 17 on October 8th with support from Caroline Rose.

Formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington by drummer Jeremiah Green (who sadly passed in 2022), bassist Eric Judy, and guitarist and singer Isaac Brock (who has remained the only consistent member over their three decade career), Modest Mouse now consists of Brock, guitarist Seth Jabour, bassist Russell Higbee, drummer Damon Cox, percussionist Ben Masserella, and keyboardist Keith Karman. Signing with Up Records in 1995, the band released their debut album, This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, a year later. In 1997 they released their breakout album, The Lonesome Crowded West, which earned the band a cult-following and went on to be considered one of the defining albums of ‘90s indie rock with its erratic energy, raucous instrumentals, dark and introspective lyrics, and Brock’s raw, slightly unhinged vocals. They followed up in 2000 with their major label debut (with Epic Records), The Moon & Antarctica, which featured an expansive, ever-changing sound filled with warped strings and keys and layers upon layers of sometimes soothing, sometimes assaulting guitar. The album received a nearly perfect score from Pitchfork and reached No. 120 on the Billboard Hot 200 and No. 5 on their Heatseekers chart.

In 2004 they released Good News For People Who Love Bad News, which increased the band’s sound to include horns and banjo and included No. 1 single “Float On,” leading to a platinum certification, a Saturday Night Live Performance, and two Grammy nominations. Modest Mouse continued in a similar vein on 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, where they were joined by Smith’s guitarist Johnny Marr and earned their first No. 1 album on the Billboard Hot 200 with lead single, “Dashboard.” Following an eight year break between albums, the band has released three albums since 2015, including An Eraser And A Maze through independent record label Glacial Pace in June of 2026. The album, which is described by Apple Music as “as energized and inventive as Modest Mouse has sounded in years,” embraces Brock’s balancing act between chaos and control as he howls about love versus hate on explosive opener “Picking Dragons’ Pockets,” fuses their signature gruff sound with electronics on “Song About Nothing,” and contemplates the untimely death of his friend, original drummer Jeremiah Green, amidst thumping bass and growling guitars on “Third Side of the Moon.” Known for their restlessly aggressive and unpredictable sound, unbridled spirit, wild concerts, and Brock’s existential-dread filled lyrics and signature manically forceful vocal delivery, Modest Mouse continues to be one of the most ambitious and eccentric indie bands of the last thirty years.
