Mariachi El Bronx brings The You Ése Tour, in support of their new album Mariachi El Bronx (IV), to City Winery NYC on September 25th with special guests Bedouin Soundclash and Max Diaz.
Mariachi El Bronx is the mariachi alter ego of LA punk band, The Bronx. The Bronx was formed in 2002 by vocalist Matt Caughthran, guitarist Joby J. Ford, bassist James Tweedy, and drummer Jorma Vik. The band’s first show caught the attention of CRUSH Media Music Management’s Jonathan Daniel (who immediately became their manager) and after only 11 more shows, the band signed a contract with Island Def Jam Records. However, The Bronx decided that they wanted to build themselves as a band first before releasing music through a major label and instead released their debut album, 2003’s The Bronx (I), through their own independent label, White Drugs. Since then the band, amidst a series of lineup changes (including the addition of former Queen’s of the Stone Age drummer, Joey Castillo), has released eight studio albums of full-force, high-velocity hardcore punk music as The Bronx.
In 2007, the band announced that in addition to their punk music as The Bronx, they would simultaneously begin to release mariachi music as Mariachi El Bronx. Beginning with 2009’s Mariachi El Bronx, the band has since released six mariachi albums eventually landing on the lineup of Caughthran, Ford, bassist/guitarrón player Vince Hidalgo, drummer Jared Shavelson, guitarist Ken Horne, string and horn player Ray Suen, violinist Katie Jacoby, and horn players Keith Douglas and Brad Magers. The band operates under the ethos that punk and mariachi are not mutually exclusive and as Caughthran explains, “Punk rock and mariachi music are very similar in soul. It’s working class music. It’s real music.” Since its inception, Mariachi El Bronx has been met with rave reviews from critics and fans alike who have praised the band’s exploration of styles such as cumbia, norteño, and bolero, as well as their deep respect for Mariachi culture, with the band’s second album, 2011’s Mariachi El Bronx (II), debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Alternative New Artist chart. Earlier this year, they released their sixth studio album, Mariachi El Bronx (IV), which embraces emotionally-rich storytelling, exploring thoughtful tales of grief and celebration, underscored by the musical depth and infectious, punk inspired spirit that has always made Mariachi El Bronx’s music so compelling. Known for their energetic live performances in which they dress in all black charro suits, the band has performed at NPR’s Tiny Desk, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Riot Fest, Bonnaroo, and much more, including a stint as the house band for El Rey Network’s Lucha Underground.
