The Hollywood Bowl became a celebration of hip-hop as The Roots and Nas reunited for the third consecutive year, delivering a sold-out show that showcased some of the genre’s most influential artists. Black Thought, the lead MC of The Roots, opened the evening with songs from the group’s early catalog, immediately getting the crowd on its feet. Between songs, he spoke about how a true concert brings people together regardless of race or background, a message that resonated with the audience throughout the night.
De La Soul followed with a set built around classics from their early albums. Rapper Kevin Mercer kept the energy high, encouraging the audience to sing along and participate throughout the performance. Bun B of legendary rap duo UGK was next, performing a mix of fan favorites along with a remix of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes,” which drew one of the loudest reactions of the opening half. T.I., introduced as the “King of the South,” closed the first portion of the show with a high-energy performance that had fans from the front rows to the upper levels of the Bowl on their feet, rapping along to his biggest hits.
After a brief intermission, Black Thought returned to the stage with another selection of songs from The Roots’ catalog, setting the stage for the night’s headliner. Introduced as the “King of New York,” Nas emerged to deafening cheers from the sold-out crowd. Joined by Black Thought throughout portions of the set, Nas performed many of his biggest hits, with nearly every song met by a chorus of fans singing along.
From beginning to end, the audience remained fully engaged, rarely returning to their seats as each performer brought a different style and energy to the stage. The atmosphere remained electric throughout the evening, with every artist taking time to praise Los Angeles and thank the crowd for its enthusiasm. More than just a concert, the evening served as a celebration of hip-hop’s legacy, bringing together generations of artists and fans for a memorable night at one of the city’s most iconic venues.
