After headlining Lollapalooza at the end of July, The Smashing Pumpkins will set out on the Rats in a Cage tour across North America, arriving in NYC on October 4th with a show at Barclays Center. The tour celebrates the 30th anniversary of their iconic album, Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness, and they will be playing two sets with an intermission, starting promptly at show time without an opener.
Formed in Chicago in 1988 by lead vocalist and guitarist, Billy Corgan, and guitarist James Iha, The Smashing Pumpkins soon grew to their full size adding bassist, D’Arcy Wretzky, and drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin. The band burst onto the scene in 1991 with their debut album, Gish, which became an underground success. Their 1993 album, Siamese Dream, skyrocketed them to mainstream success, debuting at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 200 list and eventually being certified quadruple platinum with over 6 million copies sold. The album is widely considered one of the greatest albums of the 1990s and established The Smashing Pumpkins as one of the leading bands in the early-1990s alternative revolution.
The band pushed the envelope even further with 1995’s Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness. At twenty eight songs and two hours, the double album would become the biggest moment of their career. The album debuted at number one on Billboard Hot 100, was diamond certified by the RIAA, and was nominated for seven Grammy’s, taking home the award for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” (from which the anniversary tour gets its name). With hits like the epic, orchestrally-dense opener “Tonight, Tonight” and the intense, no holds barred attack of “Tales of a Scorched Earth,” the album pushes the band’s signature sound past its limit and solidifies them as a paragon of alternative-rock music. The grand vision of the album carries through to their live performances which are known for their mixture of mosh-pit driving aggression and transcendent high-art ambition. With the band promising to play the entirety of the iconic album along with hits and fan favorites from across their nearly four decade long career, the Rats in a Cage tour is bound to be a massive spectacle for the ages.
