skull crushing journey
Ever since forming in 2020, metal band Desiccation has been dazzling listeners with their dark and soul-jolting music. The band’s last album, Cold Death Earth, was released back in 2021 and earlier this month, Desiccation released their latest work, Legatum Mortuorum. As a whole, this album is amazing in how each track takes listeners on a musical journey where the instrumentation and vocal performances provide different sounds.
Kicking Legatum Mortuorum off is “All Light Is Gone,” and what is truly striking about the surging track is how the powerful drum and guitar playing welcomes people into the band’s world with harmonic keyboards, beats and riffs that make the project sound like a headbanging symphony raging in the background, while the dominant and grungy vocal performance contributes to the chaos with ear-piercing emotional shrieks.
“In Cold Blood” is by far one of the best tracks on the album due to how the music blends with its thrilling theme. While listening, the constant eerie shrieking from the vocalist brings the feeling that danger is just around the corner, where more killings and other evil things are about to happen. Also, the whole production carries the style of a horror movie thanks to the dooming noises from the instrumentation that threaten to destroy everything in their path.
Another lethal track is “Legatum Mortuorum.” Right off the bat, the energized symphonic music can be heard shaking the atmosphere with blazing keys, riffs and beats that make the composition feel like danger has arrived with great power and demand. However, the best part can be found in the middle of “Legatum Mortuorum,” where a sizzling guitar solo dazzles the mind with sharp and mind-bending talent.
Another standout number is “Ashes Unto The Abyss,” and just like “In Cold Blood,” this track sounds like it belongs in a horror movie where a huge battle has started and only one person can make it out alive. The guitar and vocal style gives everything a sense of insecurity about being drawn into the unknown parts of the world that surround us. Each riff and vocal pitch brings out the human feeling of being lost and vulnerable while chaos continues to destroy the people and things around us.
For those who enjoy hearing bombastic symphonic music mixed with face-smacking metal, this album will serve those needs and can lead some people into an imagination where many have lost their souls in battle. Legatum Mortuorum is a musical experience filled with sheer talent.
