During the tail end of her “Radical Optimism Tour” Dua Lipa debuted a couple special cover tracks to round out her setlists and pay homage to some music greats in the area. After a brief sting of the tour that started in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and made its way up through South and Central America, the tour wrapped up with three shows in Mexico City. After a recent show where, Dua Lipa invited Fher Olvera, lead singer of Mexican rock band, Mana, to stage where the two performed Mana’s classic track “Oye Mi Amor”. The surprise appearance marked the first of a string of special guests for Lipa during her Mexico City performances.
Most recently, at her third and final show in Mexico City, and her last of the Latin American tour, Dua Lipa performed a classic hit to pay homage to a Mexican music legend, 30 years after her death. For the final night of the shows, Lipa performed the classic song made famous by Selena, “Amor Prohibido”. The song first debuted as the title track for Selena’s third studio album. Since then it remains her most streamed song on Spotify and hit No.1 on the Billboard music charts in 1994, the year the album was released.
The performance from Dua Lipa was a welcome surprise for fans who packed the arean, with nearly everyone taking their phones out to record the moment. Selena’s legacy has far outlived her, and Dua Lipa’s cover was a beautiful and well done tribute to a Mexican music icon.
