Jordana brings sweet, sonic simplicity for new EP.
Jordanaland is the newest musical venture from the 25-year-old bedroom pop singer/songwriter Jordana Nye. As this EP starts, there is a noticeable sense of hopeful melancholy, sonically expressing the trials and tribulations of growing up and trying to figure oneself out in the world. Filled with longing melodies and simplistic instrumentals, Jordana utilizes the sweet nature of these songs to tell her story of loss, heartbreak and how you can eventually move on from it.
On the first listen to this project, there may be an initial skepticism surrounding some of the stripped-down nature of some of the songs, but as the album plays out, you realize that sense of simplicity only adds to the album’s charm. With catchy instrumentals and enticingly cheerful vocals, songs like “Like that” feel like a warm return to the optimism of some of the early 2000s pop music that many of her listeners grew up with. At the same time, however, Jordana doesn’t steer away from open and honest vulnerability, with songs like “Still Do” speaking on the difficulties of moving on from someone who genuinely made you happy. The honesty that this track displays accurately reflects the difficulty of the transitional time of falling out of love, realizing that someone may not care or love you the way you want and how there is nothing you can do about it. Another standout track is the album’s title track, “Jordanaland.” This song is able to bring the listener further into the sweet embrace of the collective innocence of this album’s push towards forward growth after the feeling of loss.
Reminiscent of the sweet melodic pop of yesteryear, Jordana utilizes the sweet nature of these songs to tell her story of loss, heartbreak and redemption while also taking the time to serve as a healthy introspective escape from the weight of loss. This project takes the listener into the singer’s own personal world, an escape into an open and honest showcasing of her relationship with her self, her past love and her family. Throughout the runtime of this EP, many tracks feel like a tasteful nod to the influence of other singer songwriters, while also cementing her own place in the modern pop landscape. Utilizing wistful harmozation with catchy production throughout this project, Jordana utilizes these tracks as an honest look in the mirror, addressing personal struggles in the best way she can, by taking her past challenges and turning them into something truly beautiful to listen too.
