A straightforward sound that makes for an uncomplicated listen.

Bass Drum of Death, a garage punk band from Mississippi, recently released their sixth album, SIX, on September 12, showcasing their DIY and garage sound without the actual DIY part in a clean and concise album. 

The album opens up with an intro that is just amp feedback, which really hones in on the garage band feel of the album. “Phantom Drip” has a classic alternative indie sound, with driving drums that really grab the attention of the listener. The track features a bass solo as well, which is a nice addition. “Never Gonna Drink About You” is perfect for a mosh pit. The instruments smoothly follow the rhythm of the lyrics, allowing the two to be locked in and aware of each other. “Do Nothing” also begins with amp feedback, adding punchy drums and bass for a slower track, choosing to keep the guitar in the background and allowing the others to shine. “Pick ‘Em Up And Put ‘Em Down” has a loud and proud guitar line that gives the track a head-banging feel. There is a strip down and build up on the bridge that pushes the track forward. “Got A Feeling” is another slower one. The bass and guitar aren’t very distinct, but it works in terms of giving the track an understated quality, yet it still manages to showcase how in sync the instruments are. “Like A Knife” adds harmonies to the vocal line while keeping the instruments stripped back and simple. This track really gives GarageBand, but in the best way possible. “Zeroed Out” picks up the pace again for another mosh-worthy track while“Living In My Head”  continues the DIY feel of the album. “Day Late, Dollar Short” lets the vocalist, John Barrett, shine. Finishing it off is “Night Ride,” which has a psychedelic atmosphere. The guitar intensely drives the psychedelic sound for a track that lets the listener dance and get lost in as the collection concludes. 

At 32 minutes long, Bass Drum of Death showcases their passion for their craft with SIX. The fact that Jeremy Ferguson, who produced for Cage The Elephant, worked on this record is evident as it keeps that same grunge and indie sound without falling too similar to the former. Sounding straight out of the movie Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Bass Drum of Death drives that edgy DIY sound that gets people moving. SIX is a concise, straight-to-the-point album that is an easy listen for anyone craving a true alternative grunge sound.
