The Knocks & Dragonette bring the glitter in Revelation.
In 2022, The Knocks and Dragonette joined forces on “Slow Song,” a track that seamlessly paired Dragonette’s sharp, commanding vocals with The Knocks’ glossy, groove-driven production. The chemistry was undeniable, and that single set the stage for their full-length collaborative album, Revelation.
The Knocks, a New York–based electronic duo, first made their mark in the underground dance scene with a signature blend of house, disco and funk-laced beats, as well as uplifting, stylish tracks that often spotlight guest vocalists like Sofi Tukker and Carly Rae Jepsen. Dragonette, meanwhile, began as a band but ultimately evolved into Martina Sorbara’s solo project, known for its playful yet cutting-edge electro-pop sound. On their own they shine, but together they’ve created something that feels both fresh and electric.
Revelation is the full realization of what happens when The Knocks and Dragonette bring their strengths together. It is the product of genuine creative chemistry, an album that glitters with retro synth-pop energy while pushing their sound into new territory. At its core, it is a lush, dance-pop playground, overflowing with glossy production, infectious hooks and rhythms that move both body and mood. The project leans into 1980s aesthetics, weaving layers of shimmering synths and sparkling textures, but it never feels like simple nostalgia. Instead, it balances those retro influences with a sleek, modern finish, giving the record a timeless quality that feels equally alive on the dance floor or through headphones on a late-night drive.
The album begins with the title track, “Revelation,” a song that immediately introduces arpeggiated synths, transporting listeners to the ’80s. It is songs like “Love Me Alive,” where the clear ’80s inspirations shine the best. Sorbara’s clear and stunning vocals and the catchy melodic choices of the lyrics make this project worth listening to.
With songs like “Friday Night,” it becomes clear that vintage, glittery inspirations form the heartbeat of the album. The production glows with a polished, neon sheen, evoking the shimmer of disco floors and the pulse of late-night city lights. Yet, beneath that radiant surface lies a raw, textured energy that keeps the music from feeling too pristine. This grit comes through in the vocal delivery, the melodic choices and the emotive imperfections that color each performance. The result is a sound that dazzles with retro glamour while holding onto a deeper intensity, balancing shine with substance in a way that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly alive.
