An interactive setlist that fans were happy to join in on.
Blending the custom of southern spirit with a pinch of psychedelic rock, My Morning Jacket delivered a hallucinatory yet magical performance at Hollywood Palladium on August 19th, 2025. The band’s performance in Los Angeles was part of their 20th anniversary celebration tour of their sensational fourth studio album Z (2005). The fans had a wondrous opportunity to listen to the entirety of the album and to also hear a glimpse of their latest and tenth studio album, Is (2025), as well as a handful of fan favorite songs that represent their 27-year career and their southern spirit from Louisville, Kentucky.
Before My Morning Jacket’s performance, soft rock band Melt delivered a lively and intimate opening act for the audience. The indie band outlined an interesting mixture between the sound of soul and rock as their performance radiated with heartfelt sincerity. The performance of sprightly lead vocalist Veronica Stewart-Frommer, as well as the band’s positive playfulness, was surely a delight for the dedicated fans as they awaited the main act.
Following the opener, My Morning Jacket emerged onto the haze-filled stage –illuminating their stylish long hair look and their flamboyant 90s outfits. The band’s dedicated long-time fans delivered a whopping 3-minute standing ovation even before the performance began (even the fans reflected the band’s distinctive style of slow jam music). Then, as the crowd’s applause subsided, My Morning Jacket began performing the first song of the night, “Wordless Chorus.”
The opening song’s reserved rhythm and progressive melody, paired with Jim James’ husky yet mystic vocals, painted a cozy and idyllic tone for the night. During their performance, constant rhythmic and melodic changes were accompanied by disco and flashing lights as well as spotlights on individual members–while each of them delivered an extended instrumental play with extreme meticulousness.
The first set of the night entirely consisted of Z, which included performances of their uplifting country rock songs “What a Wonderful Man” and “Off the Record,” soulful folk songs such as “Anytime” and “Knot Comes Loose” and finishing it off with an even slower-paced rendition of the originally 8-minute-long song, “Dondante.”
On the contrary, the second set delved mainly into atmospheric, slower-paced and purely instrumental songs. Some of the highlights from the second set include minimalistic instrumental performances of “Touch Me I’m Going to Scream Pt. 1 & 2,” a sweet collaborative performance with Veronica Stewart-Frommer for the song “Holdin On to Black Metal” and finishing the night off with an encore performance of a wholeheartedly country/folk song, “Dancefloors.”
My Morning Jacket’s performance at Hollywood Palladium was filled with nostalgic sensations along with the scent of an herbal aroma being imprinted through their relaxed sound. Over the course of their set, My Morning Jacket delivered a calming spiritual meditation session for the audience–perhaps a necessary measure of action amidst the world that is changing and evolving at an unprecedented pace.
