Prog rock is not dead. Although it often seems like a musical territory primarily left to legacy acts like Yes, Jethro Tull and Rush, the fact of the matter is that there is a litany of exciting new Prog-rock bands and a truly astounding amount of classic bands making grand returns with brand new material. Of the bands of this status to make a comeback there is none more monumental than the legends, arguably the greatest prog rock act of all time, King Crimson.
That’s right, King Crimson is hitting the studio once again. For the first time in over twenty years no less. In spite of this lack of official studio releases the band has not spent that time in silence. They have toured, released live albums, endured lineup changes, label disputes and even a documentary. The band has been bubbling under the surface for two decades patiently awaiting their moment to explode back into the mainstream.
This announcement comes by way of Jakko Jakszyk, a new addition to the band who will be filling in on vocal and guitar duties for late frontman, Ian McDonald. According to Stereogum, he stated in a recent interview “It was an amazing thing to have done, and in a way, part of it’s still happening ,as we speak, we’re doing a King Crimson studio album.”
This sly announcement was quickly followed by a press release which announced that the new album will be titled Power to Believe and will include material familiar to listeners of the live albums as well as some wholly new songs. Other than this, very little is known about the nature of this project but it can be said with certainty that we will see King Crimson mark another milestone in the annals of rock history in the very near future.
