For the last month, one question has been on everyone’s mind. ‘What is going to be 2025’s song of the summer?’ It seems entirely possible that this week J Balvin and DJ Snake have delivered a clear answer in the form of ‘Noventa’.
The reggaeton banger has everything you could want out of a summertime hit. Catchy hooks, killer spanish rap verses, an absolutely sweaty, trunk shaking, beat and a quick runtime to ensure infinite replay value. It follows the mold of prior latin club bangers like ‘Gasolina’ and ‘Despacito’ but adds just a little more grit and grime. It’s a song that actually makes you want to get out on the streets and find some trouble but it’s not so abrasive as to discourage radio play.
The song also comes with a truly excellent music video featuring the two artists with a seemingly infinite mob of people surrounding them. As they drink, party, and shake ass in the streets of New York. It’s a video that makes you want to get outside and join them. The constantly interspersed shots of police as well as the general underground vibe of the music and particularly the visuals do call to mind the neverending ICE raids under the Trump administration but J Balvin, DJ Snake and their entire crew are going to party through turmoil nonetheless. This video could be seen as a perfect example of the notion of joy as an act of resistance.
