A Gritty Comeback Album

Everyone loves a comeback album and Witchcraft is here to delight. Having signed with Heavy Psych Sounds, their five-year hiatus is over, with IDAG demanding attention – and that’s putting it lightly. Their latest offering is a gritty, no-frills return longtime fans didn’t know they needed.

From the title track’s first dynamic chord, IDAG screams “I’m here and it’s time to pay attention,” the band’s inevitable slow burn on the horizon. Each riff is laced with raw distortion with Magnus Pelander’s unmistakable vocals on full display.

Opening with “Idag,” a track that’s beautifully long and immersive, the vocals sync perfectly with beautifully dirty, distorted instrumentals. The strong vibrato adds raw emotion that cuts through – even though it’s in Swedish.

“Drömmar av is” keeps the Swedish vocals and delivers a dark, brooding atmosphere that’s incredibly dynamic. Nothing here is clean but all distortion, candid guitar riffs and powerful chords make it surprisingly catchy.

And the band is just getting started. “Drömmen om död och förruttnelse” moves fast and gritty, with power chords flowing effortlessly, driving the energy forward, while “Irreligious Flamboyant Flame” switches to English and leans into psychedelic vibes. The vocals remain powerful and the cleaner, less distorted sound creates an interesting contrast to the Swedish tracks.

“Christmas” is a total departure – it’s acoustic, minimal and percussion-free. It’s pensive and deeply emotional, often discordant, feeling like a cathartic purge of thoughts. At its heart, it’s a gritty love story. The same energy ebbs and flows into “Spirit,” the hauntingly beautiful and slow – almost painful – track of epic proportions. The guitar laments perfectly while the muted vocals don’t punch through but still land hard, delivering a raw, harrowing impact.

IDAG straddles moody and compelling simultaneously, the entire album alive with emotion and more often than not, distortion. The result? A harmonious – even when it’s conflicting – blend of heavy and haunting sounds.
