The sparkling fresh country duo Julien Baker & TORRES have had fans awaiting their debut record, Send A Prayer My Way. Having not previously been country, the two have taken their southern roots and created a sweet yet powerful country record. Julien Baker, best known for her role in the ever-so-influential powerhouse trio, boygenius, has, like all band members, created her own voice in solo music. Boygenius has some of the most intricate analogies and mind-altering lyrics this generation has seen. Collaborating with Mackenzie Scott, known as TORRES, these two truly understand each other on this album and were able to create something their fans may not have expected, while keeping both of their souls on display.
Right off the bat in “Dirt,” the softness paired with twisting lyrics “What the hell you gotta scream at me for? / You aren’t gonna listen any other way / Used to think that it was magic now I’m sure that it’s a curse,” we know this album is going to be something to sit with for a while.
One of the singles, “Sugar in the Tank,” is a track that is sure to be a cover song for years to come, as the harmonies are paired so smoothly and feel the love so passionately. Turning from love to heartbreak, not that there is much of a difference as they portray wonderfully, “Bottom of a Bottle” shows the emotional change from “Sugar in the Tank” to the downfall that is sure to come. “I lost my nerve so I searched the corner bar / Next thing I knew, I was horizontal, and my friends were fishin’ me out of the bottom of the bottle.”
Scott’s voice at the beginning of “No Desert Flower” paired with the deep percussion to be joined by Baker is sure to capture these lyrics, showing how beautifully this duo blends together. The two of them show a heavy range with elegant, bright harmonies, to deep cuts on “Tuesday.”
“It’s a nightmare out there / You know life ain’t fair / But you still wanna have a showdown.” “Showdown” strips down with violin and emphasizes vocals as they are screaming for help and falling into the unknown and despair.
“Sylvia” reaches a register that will allow the song to be felt in every part of the body; it’s one of those songs that simply makes sense. The harmonies on the name “Sylvia” will live as the heart of this record. Send A Prayer My Way comes to a close with “Goodbye Baby,” incorporating a stomp-clap goodbye with a bell ringing on a door as they leave the record behind them.
Julien Baker & TORRES have come out with a no-skip record as Send A Prayer My Way is everything we could have asked for. There in so much talent and range to create a sound that resonates with both of them in a very special way.
