60’s Psychedelia with modern flair
On their latest album, the five-piece outfit from Northern Sweden, Gin Lady, delivers a refreshing mix of 60s psychedelic with modern touches. Their seventh album following 2021’s Camping With Bohdi, Gin Lady, combines elements of 60s rock and psychedelia with modern hooks to create a euphoric listening experience that will continually pull their listeners in.
Released Feb 7, 2025- Before the Dawn of Time delivers spacey tracks that bring the etherealness of 60’s rock while maintaining the consistency and brevity of modern rock throughout. Highlighted in the three-track run of “Mulberry Bend,” “The Universe Vibrant Rings,” and “The Brain,”- Gin Lady displays their ability to craft a cohesive sound across an LP without becoming overly repetitive, all while creating space for each track to stand out individually. “Mulberry Bend” displays Gin Lady’s songwriting talents in opening with punchy instrumentals crafted through layered guitar, synth, and percussion before smoothly guiding the listener into a hazy chorus filled with vocal harmonies. “The Universe Vibrant Rings” calls to mind influential Psychedelic bands such as The Doors as nervous synths and reverb-drenched guitars meander between a stabilizing vocal melody before reaching a euphoric chorus. Lastly, “The Brain” retains Gin Lady’s hooky lyrics and spacey sound while sticking to a more traditional radio-friendly style and an additional guitar solo.
Additionally, tracks such as “Mighty River” and “You’re a Big Star” remain highlights on Before the Dawn of Time– the former holding a soaring chorus delving into indie rock that calls to mind a sound similar to Boy and Bear’s Harlequin Dream. The latter track, “You’re a Big Star,” features intricate guitar work while featuring Dylan-eqsue storytelling lyrically.
Blending elements of past and present, Before the Dawn of Time displays the Swedish group’s craft in creating massive soundscapes with few instruments while simultaneously avoiding repetitiveness and honing in a distinct euphoric sound.
