This band brings back vein-jolting noises throughout Songs In Crimson.
English rock band Satan was formed in 1979, and they became a part of the vast British heavy metal wave. The band became the influencers for trash and speed metal that heavily advanced in the 80s. The last piece of music Satan released was “The Executioner/Oppression” in 2023; last month, the band released the album Songs In Crimson. Each track consists of face-smacking music that brings back an old-school metal music vibe while the vocal performance shakes the background with sheer dominance. Songs In Crimson is a great album showing how the band is still musically hungry to perform.
Kicking things off is “Frantic Zero,” and immediately, a sizzling lead guitar solo dazzles the mind before the rest of the instrumentation jolts the veins with blazing sounds as the vocalist harmonically sings out the lyrics with sheer power. “Frantic Zero has all the elements of classic metal, and it is stunning to hear the band performing music that represents the thrasher of the 80s.
“Matyrdome” is a true head-headbanger thanks to the dynamic drum playing. While listening, the drumbeats are constantly being played on a faster tempo, contributing to the maddening speed of the music. What is truly enjoyable is how the drummer is able to start fast before switching to a simple but faster beat on “Matyrdome.”
“Captives” is a bit different from the previous song because there is a small mix of metal and punk, but the compelling vocal performance shines. The thrilling sound of the vocalist wailing out the lyrics brings a strong sense of danger and madness, while the guitar playing dazzles the mind with rich notes on “Captives.”
“Deadly Crimson” ends Songs In Crimson on a high note due to how the band adds the element of blues to their music. The chorus, in particular, has a wailing bluesy vibe that brings the feeling of death near before the band entirely switches back to their original metal music. “Deadly Crimson” shows Satan having fun with their musical creativity.
Songs In Crimson clearly show that Satan is still capable of performing music in today’s music world. Although the band took a pause for a while before reuniting in 2011, they still sound just as good, and their music is packed with the metal they are known for.
