This 90s feminist punk band is coming to Chicago for their North American tour on Aug. 30, 2024. They are set to perform at The Salt Shed (indoor) with opener Shadow Show.
Bikini Kill got its start in 1990 in Olympia, Washington, and Washington, D.C. They were vital during the Riot Grrrl movement of the 90s and early 2000s. The band was formed by lead singer and songwriter Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail.
Bikini Kill started touring a year after they were formed in 1991. Their first official album, Pussy Whipped, didn’t drop until 1993. After that, they released four more albums in 1996, 1998, 2014, and 2015.
One of their most famous songs, if not their most famous song, entitled “Rebel Girl” was produced and released for an original motion picture soundtrack called The Punk Singer which was a film about Kathleen Hanna. The soundtrack included not just Bikini Kill songs but various feminist punk artists like The Julie Ruin and Le Tigre.
The band went steady for 7 years with their hardcore feminist punk lyrics and fiery performances but the band officially broke up in 1997.
Since breaking up in 1997, the band has continued to produce music. Though it’s a relatively unorthodox way of doing things, their cult-following fans are ecstatic for anything they come up with.
Bikini Kill is touring North America for their 2024 reunion tour. They are playing Chicagos’ Salt Shed (indoors) on Aug. 30, 2024, with the opener Shadow Show. This show is sure to turn up the energy and intensity. Tickets can be purchased now through Ticketmaster ticketmaster.com.
