An all-star Elliott Smith tribute concert titled “All My Rowdy Friends” has been announced by New Monkey Studio, a recording space originally founded by Smith himself. The show takes place on Tuesday, August 6th at the Regent Theater in Los Angeles and features performances by Grandaddy, Band Of Horses and more.
The all-star tribute show takes place on what would have been Smith’s 55th birthday. The lineup includes performances from Jason Lytle and Jim Fairchild of Grandaddy, Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses, comedian Margaret Cho, Illuminati Hotties, Cheekface, Aaron Lee Tasjan, and several more, including Scott McPherson, Aaron Embry and Shon Sullivan from Elliott Smith’s Figure 8 touring band. The special performance is also a 20th anniversary celebration of Van Nuys, California’s New Monkey Studio, Smith’s vintage recording space.
According to a press release, the studio remains “the closest thing we have today to a functional Elliott Smith museum.” “This night is not only a celebration of Elliott’s music but also a critical step towards preserving a sonic sanctuary that has become a historical landmark in the music community,” says studio manager Robert Cappadona.
The event will also feature an Elliott Smith pop-up shop from independent record store Fingerprints, as well as visual film elements playing throughout the evening. The concert’s title, “All My Rowdy Friends”, comes from the Hank Williams Jr. song of the same name that Smith had notably covered. All proceeds from the show will go towards the maintenance and preservation of New Monkey Studio.
