Godspeed You! Black Emperor at Union Transfer on November 24th

French-Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor is hitting the road for their 2024 North American tour, coming to Union Transfer in Philadelphia on November 24th.

The group formed in 1994 in Montreal, releasing their debut album, F# A# ∞, in 1997. The band, known for its unique and mainly instrumental sound, has also been known to use their platform to speak on political issues, specifically themes of anti-capitalism and anti-individualism. Quickly following the band’s initial release, they gained a cult following that would only grow with future releases.

The band’s most recent release, G_d’s Pee at State’s End!, released in 2021, received the highest praise and acclaim of any of their albums yet. The band previewed two singles off of the album at a lived show in 2019 – “Cliff” and “Glacier” – and began formally recording the album in 2020. With the release of the album, the band released a list of demands, as they had with their previous album release Luciferian Towers. The list included “empty the prisons” and “end the forever wars and all other forms of imperialism,” highlighting the political themes in the band’s work.
