Iconic metal band Sepultura is hitting the road to celebrate 40 years of music with a farewell tour aptly named Celebrating Life Through Death, coming to the Franklin Music Hall in Philadelphia on October 6th.
Formed in 1984 in Brazil, Sepultura would come onto the scene and caused the popularity of groove metal and nu metal to skyrocket in the early 1990s. They are known for fusing heavy metal sounds with the music of Brazil, their country of origin, as shown in their first-ever release, the 1985 EP Bestial Devastation. As noted in reviews of their early albums, the band wrote music in English even though they had not known how to speak it previously, using the music creation process as a chance to explore the language.
The band found their first big hit with their sixth studio album, Roots, released in 1996. The album took an even deeper dive into the complexities of Brazilian melodies and rhythms, and received high praise from critics and fans alike with hits including “Ratamahatta” and “Attitude.”
The tour can be expected to be a “greatest hits” of sorts, with the band performing songs from their 15 studio album releases, the most recent being Quadra in 2020. Sepulutra will also be joined by three additional groups, American metal bands Obituary and Agnostic Front, and fellow Brazilian metal band Claustrofobia.
