Grammy-award winning rock band Soul Asylum is coming to Philadelphia as part of their newly announced Slowly But Shirley tour, coming to Union Transfer on October 28th.
Soul Asylum was formed in 1981 in Minneapolis Minnesota, and released their debut studio album, Say What You Will, Clarence… Karl Stole the Truck, in 1984. The band’s early work is generally categorized as pre-grunge-era rock, and inspired many popular 1990s bands, such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam.
While the band initially had a niche fan base, their popularity exploded in the 90s with the release of their sixth studio album, Grave Dancers Union. This album, released in 1992, contained the band’s chart-topping single “Runaway Train,” which also won the Grammy for best rock song in 1994. Their following studio album, Let Your Dim Light Shine, would be the best performing album on their discography, containing hits such as “Misery” and “Just Like Anyone.”
The band has released twelve studio albums to date, the most recent being released in 2020; however, in 2023 and in honor of its 30th anniversary, the band released The Complete Unplugged – NYC ‘93, a full live album of their 1993 MTV Unplugged performances. This album provided fans with rawer, more stripped back versions of their favorite classics.
The opening act, Juliana Hatfield Three, is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the release of their debut studio album Become What You Are. The trio will be performing songs off of the 1993 release, including some of their most popular songs, such as “Spin the Bottle” and “My Sister.”
