The Hollywood Palladium hosted special guests Waxahatchee along with Good Morning on Thursday, May 16.

Opening with “Dog Years” from their latest album Good Morning Seven, the Melbourne-based rock-duo, Good Morning, set the stage with a tranquil, folksy ambiance for the audience to acclimate to. One song that particularly shined through was their recent hit “Excalibur,” a song with a playful chorus that could be listened to on repeat, or “over and over again” as singers Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons would say.

Incorporating keys and violin to build up songs like “Out to Pasture” and “Queen of Comedy” created an incomparable atmosphere, illuminated by the chandeliers of the Hollywood Palladium’s performance hall. Taking a breather after “Country” from their 2021 album, Barnyard, the band’s frontmen gave thanks to the venue, the audience, and Waxahatchee for having them on their tour before closing out with “$10” from their 2018 Prize//Reward album.

As the night went on, the crowd filled the room as Waxahatchee strolled on stage in her iconic silver boots under a bouncy tulle skirt and an accompanying colorful bandeau.

Starting off with “3 Sisters” from her latest album Tigers Blood, the southern singer-songwriter introduced a carefully crafted piece of art to her listeners. Transitioning into “Evil Spawn,” Waxahatchee – also known as Katie Crutchfield – mentioned that she would be performing the entire Tigers Blood album which received a roar of enthusiasm from her elated supporters. From “Lone Star Lake” to “Crimes of the Heart” and her own personal favorite “Crowbar,” audience members were tuned in — dazzled by the band’s instrumentation from bass to banjo. Crutchfield’s vocal range was a topic of conversation amongst many concertgoers, wonderstruck by her lyricism and her ability to shoot up into a higher register with ease.

Closing out the night, covers “Line of Sight” and “Hurricane” by PLAINS — a collaborative band between Crutchfield and Jess Williamson — were incorporated into the set before ending in what seemed to be an early night with “Tigers Blood.” It was not long before Waxahatchee re-entered the stage, explaining how excited she was to perform a cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Something About What Happens When We Talk,” as she would only be playing her covers at certain shows. Wrapping up with “365,” Good Morning came back to sing along to “Fire” from the Saint Cloud album.

All together, Waxahatchee and Good Morning curated two harmonious setlists, leaving fans pleased with what they had the pleasure to listen to throughout the show.
