Beth Gibbons of Portishead fame has released a new song titled “Reaching Out.” The track is from her debut solo album Lives Outgrown which is set to arrive on May 17.
The video is a 4-D animation (think a throwback to those early 2000s computer games) of Gibbons and another person floating in space. There is an interactive version where the viewer can click around the video and change the perspective as the video shifts and changes. Similar to watching a VR video without a headset.
The song is in F# minor and takes about half of the length of the song to build up from a mysterious and bouncy setup to fully orchestrated climax. The drums come in at 1:40, and take the song to another dimension, both literally in the video and figuratively in the sound. There are horns, strings, and a really nice trance/drum n bass type beat that make this experience cerebral and almost trippy at times.
