Folk punk four-piece, Violent Femmes, have announced an anniversary tour of their first two albums! They will kick off the tour with a stop in San Francisco at The Warfield on May 1.
Violent Femmes formed in 1981 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They are lead vocalist Gordon Gano, bassist Brian Ritchie, drummer Brian Sparrow, and multi-instrumentalist Blaise Garza. The group have released ten studio albums across the 40 plus year long career, crossing genre boundaries, experimenting with country, rock, punk, and more. Their debut self-titled album, released in 1983, produced their smash hit “Blister In The Sun” as well as other classic tracks like “Add It Up” and “Kiss Off.” The group followed-up a year later with the divisive and genre bending album, Hallowed Ground. The record incorporated elements of country and Christian lyrical themes.
After a brief hiatus, the Violent Femmes would return in 1988 to release more new music, eventually deciding to stop releasing new music in 2005 after the release of 2000’s Freak Magnet. The group would disband in 2007 following legal disagreements among the group members. The band reunited in 2013 to play Coachella and have remained active since, even releasing two new albums, We Can Do Anything in 2016 and Hotel Last Resort in 2019. This year marks 41 years of their debut and 40 years of Hallowed Ground.
