The Pretenders are coming to Philly! The Pretenders are a British-American rock band formed in 1978. Current members included Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica), Martin Chambers (drums, percussion, backing and occasional lead vocals), Nick Wilkinson (bass, backing vocals), James Walbourne (lead guitar, keyboards, backing vocals), Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar, backing vocals) and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards, acoustic guitar). Members have changed and left and returned over the many years the band has been active, but Hynde is the only member who has stayed a member since their formation in 1978. The Pretenders formed after Dave Hill at Anchor Records heard some demos of Hynde’s music.
The band has had many hit songs throughout their career, including “I’ll Stand By You” in 1994, “My City Was Gone” in 1982, and “Message of Love” in 1981. “I’ll Stand By You” is arguably one of their most popular songs, being covered by artists like Shakira and Carrie Underwood. Though the height of their career was in the 80s and 90s, the Pretenders are still going strong releasing music, releasing their 12th studio album, Relentless, just last year in May. The band is heading out across the U.S. and Europe from July to October. See them at their stop in Philly at the Fillmore on July 14th!
