Album Review: Loving – Any Light

Following their 2020 EP, If I Am Only My Thoughts, indie folk duo Loving returns with a fresh and compelling combination of superb instrumentals, emotional poetry, and an undeniable feeling of natural chemistry. From the first notes to the last chord, the album immerses listeners in a musical universe that is both familiar and completely new.

At its foundation, Any Light demonstrates the duo’s extraordinary coherence. Each track exudes an unforced warmth as if Jesse Henderson and David Parry are in sync with each other’s every detail. This sense of togetherness pervades every facet of the record, from the delicate interplay of guitar and violin to the rich, layered harmonies that evoke lengthy hikes through the forest.

Instrumentally, “Any Light” is a tour de force. Henderson and Parry exhibit a mastery of their craft, effortlessly weaving together a tapestry of sounds that range from delicate fingerpicking to sweeping crescendos. The album’s titular track, “Any Light,” weaves the listener through a phantasm of melodies that flutter through the album.

Tracks like “On My Way To You” and “The Light in You” showcase Loving’s ability to evoke a wide range of emotions through their music, with each note carrying a palpable sense of depth and sincerity.

If it wasn’t already obvious, the true highlight of “Any Light” lies in its lyricism. The band’s poetic storytelling invites listeners to journey through lush forests, a cracking fire, and starlit skies. Themes of love and the beauty of nature intertwine, painting vivid portraits that linger in the mind long after the music fades.

The readily apparent chemistry between the band members distinguishes Any Loving. Henderson and Perry’s debut full-length album shows that they are back and better than before, with every refrain synchronized and transition flawless between tracks. This is more than simply a group of outstanding musicians; it is a collective soul, bonded by their love of music and a common goal.

Furthermore, the production enhances the album’s organic vibe, enabling the band’s natural chemistry to shine through without dominating the intricacy of their creative creations. Each song appears to be a live performance recorded in a distant woodland studio, with every rustle of leaves and guitar string contributing to the realistic experience. The balance between intimacy and expansiveness is expertly maintained, drawing listeners further into the music with each passing minute. In an era where technology frequently dominates the creative process, Any Light is a lovely reminder of the timeless beauty that may emerge when outstanding musicians work in perfect harmony.

In essence, Any Light exemplifies the power of cooperation and connection. It serves as a reminder that sometimes the most beautiful music is created not via technical brilliance or extravagant production, but by the simple act of gathering and allowing the music to flow. With beautiful instrumentals, emotional writing, and compelling chemistry, this album will capture audiences and leave them wanting more.
