Legendary rapper, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, Andre 3000 has announced the New Blue Sun Tour in support of his first solo album in 17 years. He will be making a stop in San Francisco for a three day residency at Bimbo’s 365 Club on February 20 and 22 and The Independent on February 24.
Andre Lauren Benjamin, known professionally as Andre 3000, is best known for his work as one half of immensely popular and well-respected Atlanta based hip-hop group, Outkast. Working alongside rapper Big Boi, the duo put out six studio albums between 1992 and 2007. Producing singles like “Ms. Jackson,” “Hey Ya,” and “So Fresh, So Clean,” Outkast is widely regarded as one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time, and Andre 3000 in particular has gone down as one of the most skilled rappers in recent memory.
Since Outkast disbanded 17 years ago, Andre 3000 put out next to nothing in terms of solo material, instead opting to give out the occasional guest verse, appearing on songs by Kanye West, Beyonce, and Frank Ocean, just to name a few. In 2022, Andre 3000 was spotted numerous times playing the flute in public, later confirming his affinity for the instrument in an interview. On November 17, 2023, Andre 3000 surprised the world with the release of his first studio album, New Blue Sun, a completely instrumental, flute based record, made alongside producer Carlos Nino. The opening track “I Swear I Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album but This is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time,” made history when it became the longest track ever to appear on the Billboard 100 at 12 minutes and 20 seconds.
