The Hives at Citi Field on July 19

The Hives are a Swedish rock band formed in Fagersta in 1993. During the early 2000s, they gained worldwide recognition during the garage rock revival. Their lineup consists of vocalist Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, Nicholaus Arson on lead guitar and backing vocals, Vigilante Carlstroem on rhythm guitar, Dr. Matt Destruction on bass, and Chris Dangerous on drums. This remained unchanged from the beginning until 2013 when Matt Destruction retired for health reasons and was replaced by The Johan and Only.

Over the course of their career, The Hives have released six studio albums. In 2000, they released the album Veni Vidi Vicious and rose to mainstream success with the single “Hate to Say I Told You So,” which is now considered their signature song.

The Hives credit their entire discography is credited to songwriter “Randy Fitzsimmons.” He is considered their honorary “sixth Hive” member. In addition to writing all their songs, he actually discovered The Hives and went on to manage them.

Their live shows are highly rated and known and being one of the best live experiences, with specific praise for frontman Howlin’ Pelle. Drummer Dangerous stated that connecting with the audience requires effort and that “there are so many bands out there that don’t say a word to the crowd. I don’t get it. They don’t even look at the audience and that’s ridiculous”. The Hives are known for always dressing in matching black-and-white tuxedos because it serves as a uniform.
