Three-time Grammy award-nominated and Brit award-winning multi-platinum singer, songwriter and guitarist James Bay shares a new single entitled “All My Broken Pieces” out now via Mercury/Republic Records. Listen to “All My Broken Pieces” below.
The track is special to James’ as he wrote the song with Jamie Hartman and Boots Ottestad ten years ago while he was writing his Grammy Award-nominated album Chaos And The Calm (which featured the now infamous singles “Let It Go” & “Hold Back The River”). Recently when diving back into some old sessions he found the original demo and decided it was finally time to re-record the track. He enlisted Gabe Simon to produce it.
James’ spoke on the song and said: “When I wrote Broken Pieces I was going through a lot of changes in my life – leaving home, moving into my first place with my girlfriend Lucy, signing a record deal in America. Suddenly I was leaving all the time to travel around the world, I was rarely ever in the same place for more than a week. I somehow felt very vulnerable talking about all of this in songs. It was scary to share that I could feel so broken by experiences that I knew others would’ve killed for. And it felt very revealing to talk about having someone so vital to me who knew how to put me back together when I felt like falling apart. It’s taken a long time but I’ve always loved this song and it feels like it’s finally time to let it out into the world.”
“All My Broken Pieces” is a song that takes its time to deliver its lyrics; pauses between each line deliver a story about a troubled individual and their lover. “I’m sat bolt upright // Watching her sleep, I wish I can join her // Every single night // Always”. He sings about how she is there for him. “When I’m falling in, when I’m falling down // She knows just how to sort me out // She knows just how”. “And, when I lose, she lays on me // And nothing else matters // She takes all my broken pieces, and she puts them together”.
This kind of intimacy is incomprehensible to him. “I don’t know what it means // To lean on someone and not pull them under // But she’s so good to me // Always”. Despite the issues he has, the lover in his song is always there for him. “She told me I could start again // Turn off the lights, turn off my head // And start again. He repeats the chorus., and then sings about necessities. “She knows what I need, knows what I need, knows what I need // Yeah, she knows what I need, knows what I need // Oh”. The song ends with him repeating the title.
