Big Freedia at Brooklyn Bowl on December 8

Freddie Ross Jr. better known by his stage name Big Freedia, is an American rapper and performer most known for his work in the New Orleans genre of hip hop called bounce music. Freedia has been credited with helping popularize the underground genre.

In 1999, Freedia was performing in New Orleans clubs frequently, and began his professional career with the release of his first single, “An Ha, Oh Yeah.” His early work is described as being in the “sissy bounce” subgenre, but he has stated that there is no real separation between straight and sissy, and it is all simply bounce music. He is well known for being a gay man who embraces his feminine side and believes gender is on a spectrum.

Freeida is credited as being one of the first artists to return to performing in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. He played six to ten shows a week at block parties, nightclubs, strip clubs, and other venues while the city recuperated from the tragedy.

In 2011, he was named Best Emerging Artist and Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist in January’s “Best of the Beat Awards.” He was also nominated for the 2011 GLAAD Media Award, and following this leap in success, Freeida got his own reality show, documenting his life on tour and at home.

Central City is the second studio album by Big Freedia, released on June 23, 2023. It follows nine years after his previous album, Just Be Free
