Disco ball hats and duck beaks filled The Shrine as family and friends of all ages came to DJ duo Chromeo’s “One Night in LA” on October 1. At this special show, they co-headlined with Purple Disco Machine alongside guests Duck Sauce and DJ Kinjo as openers. The single-stage event had everyone’s attention focused on the DJs.
DJ Kinjo opened the night and set the tone as people entered the venue. There was no age limit and the range was clearly visible when a white-haired gentleman was seen carrying an infant with headphones. As the crowd began to grow Duck Sauce came on stage to a group of fans who came with mini rubber ducks and duck beaks. They were happy to hear many of his popular songs including “NGR,” “The Big Bad Wolf” (which had a fun howling call-response) and a Lourde remix of “Magnets.” The fan favorite of the Duck Sauce set was “Barbra Streisand.”
After the Duck Sauce set there was a 30-minute intermission as Chromeo’s team carried out final sound and light checks. The new set-up was revealed with a reflective stage and silver instruments, making the wait well worth it. DJ duo Chromeo entered on a smoky stage to a loud Chromeo intro chant, DJ Dave 1 came out playing guitar and P-Thugg on keys as they went straight into performing “Fancy Footwork.” They performed a range of their discography including “Night by Night” and “Must’ve Been,” alternating between music from their earlier years with “Mama’s Boy” (2001) and “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” from 2023. All night they played live and were accompanied by different light shows with each song.
Chromeo teased the audience with a new album saying “We haven’t talked about our new album yet but let’s talk about it tomorrow.’’ They interacted with the crowd jokingly, Dave 1 saying “I would love to get the Los Angeles Philharmonic Choir on this Sunday night to sing with us,’’ as well as thanking their fans for sticking with them through the years and always coming out to their shows. After thanking their openers DJ Kinjo and Duck Sauce, Chromeo also thanked Purple Disco Machine, who would be on later in the evening.
For the final song of their set, Chromeo decided to debut their new song “Personal Effects” a very funky number that had the crowd dancing. Spoiler alert this new song is the last one they added to their upcoming album titled Adult Contemporary. In their final send off Chromeo ended their set saying “Thank you so much Los Angeles we’re Chromeo funk lords!”
After a final set change and sound checks, Purple Disco Machine was the last artist of the night. The music changed from funky to party, dancers were on stage as a remix of “On My Mind” played, moving on to “One More Time” and crowd favorite “Dopamine.” He played house music all night and had the crowd dancing as confetti canons shot into the audience and disco lasers shone into the night.
