The Pharcyde at Brooklyn Bowl on November 16

The Pharcyde is an American alternative hip-hop group, formed in 1989, from South Central Los Angeles. The original group members are Imani (Emandu Wilcox), Slimkid3 (Trevant Hardson), Bootie Brown (Romye Robinson), and Fatlip (Derrick Stewart).

Pharcyde group members Slimkid3, Bootie Brown, and Imani met as dancers in the late 1980s. Their original goal was to make it with dance, and around this time Imani and Slimkid3 were in a group called “As Is.” They later were in a different group called “Play Brothers,” and during this time Bootie Brown was a backup dancer for Fatlip. After all of these connections were made, The Pharcyde was formed.

Before the group was called “The Pharcyde”, they almost went with “The Rappers” and “True Jiggaboo.” They are most known for their singles  “Drop”, “Passin’ Me By” and “Runnin.’”

The last album to be under The Pharacyde name is Humbolt Beginnings, released in 2004. Since then, however, the members have been contributing to various projects.

In 2020, west-coast hip-hop channel DUBCNN reported that there would be a reunion of all four members of Pharcyde on Fatlip’s upcoming album Torpor, with two new Pharcyde tracks. The single, titled “My Bad”, was released on August 1, 2022, and the album Torpor was officially released via Bandcamp on July 29, 2022 on CD and February 3rd, 2023 on vinyl.
