Stephen Lee Bruner, otherwise known by his stage name Thundercat, is coming to the Brooklyn Mirage on October 17!
Thundercat is a bassist, singer, producer, and songwriter from Los Angeles, CA. He is known for blending a plethora of genres for a very unique sound. Thundercat’s genres can be cataloged under funk, progressive R&B, soul, electronica, acid jazz, and psychedelic. His first moment of success was having a minor hit in Germany as a member of the boy band No Curfew. Just one year later he decided to join the band Suicidal Tendencies alongside his brother Ronald Jr., where Bruner played bass for the crossover thrash band.
American singer and rapper Erykah Badu was credited with helping Bruner find his stage presence and claims that she is the reason he started to go by the moniker, Thundercat. Before he released his first solo album, Thundercat appeared on several collaborations and projects with other artists including Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, Kendrick Lamar, and Mac Miller.
Thundercat released his first solo album in 2011, The Golden Age of Apocalypse, which featured production from Flying Lotus. This album was heavily influenced by the 1970s and fusion artists such as Stanley Clarke and George Duke.
Thundercat won a Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Performance for his work on the track “These Walls” from Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly in 2016. He released his most recent studio album, It Is What It Is in 2020 which earned him another Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album.
