Ms. Lauryn Hill and The Fugees at Barclays Center on October 19

Lauryn Noelle Hill, known formally as Ms. Lauryn Hill, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer. She is held in high regard by being called one of the greatest rappers of all time and one of the most influential musicians of her generation.

Being a woman rapper, Ms. Lauryn Hill has shot through the glass ceiling as she has popularized melodic rap, redefined hip-hop, and played a huge part in bringing the neo-soul genre into the mainstream. Hill has honors such as Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time, Greatest Women Rapper according to Billboard, and was named one of the 50 Great Voices by NPR.

Before Hill’s solo career took off, she formed a trio in high school originally called Translator Crew, and later the name shifted to what they are known as to this day, The Fugees. The group is comprised of Ms. Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Pras Michel. Over the years, they have been active for some periods at a time and inactive at others, but since 2021, they have been creating and performing yet again.

Hill released her first solo record The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1999 and it was received with great praise. It sold nearly 423,000 copies in its first week and remained on the Billboard 200 chart for four weeks. Since then, Ms. Hill’s success has not ceased one bit. Her influence on blending rap and melody has impacted many modern artists.
