The Mountain Goats are an American folk-rock band, led by singer-songwriter, John Darnielle, who will be playing a solo show at Brooklyn Made in Brooklyn, NY on September 19.
Although the name is plural, The Mountain Goats’ only member for several years was Darnielle. He has collaborated with a variety of musicians in the past, but the band currently consists of members Peter Hughes, Jon Wurster, and Matt Douglas. The Mountain Goats formed in 1991 in Claremont, California, and are now based out of Durham, North Carolina.
Darnielle released the first full album recording under The Mountain Goats’ name in 1994. Taboo VI: The Homecoming, is the only album of theirs to feature the eternity of the Bright Mountain Choir; an all-girl reggae band that Darnielle featured on many of his early recordings and performances. Between 1995-2000, they developed their style into a more experimental vibe, leaving behind the boombox recording.
In the years to follow, The Mountain Goats focus changed and shifted around several times. They began to put out concept albums, notably their first: All Hail West Texas. In 2010 they signed to Merge Records and have consistently pumped out music to the current day. When touring was put on pause in 2020 due to the pandemic, Darnielle brought back his Panasonic tape deck for the first time since 2002, which he used to record 10 new songs with the direct-to-boombox method.
In July 2023, The Mountain Goats announced their 22nd album would be released on October 27, 2023. Jenny From Thebes will be a rock opera about a woman named Jenny; a character that has already appeared in several songs from their past discography.
Back to the early days of Mountain Goats, John Darnielle takes the stage in Brooklyn to perform a solo set on September 19!
