The Flaming Lips at Moody Center on November 8th

The Flaming Lips, an American psychedelic rock band, is coming to the Moody Center in Austin, Texas on November 8th! Formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the band has been a driving force in the alternative music scene, captivating audiences with their unique sound and captivating performances. It’s a show you won’t want to miss!

Currently, The Flaming Lips consist of the talented Wayne Coyne, a multi-instrumentalist handling vocals, guitars, bass, and keyboards and the versatile Steven Drozd, who plays bass, guitars, keyboards, drums, and adds to vocals. Derek Brown brings his talents on guitars, keyboards, and percussion, while Matt Duckworth Kirksey adds his magical touch on keyboards, percussion, and drums and Nicholas Ley is on drums and percussion. Although the lineup has evolved over the years, Coyne and Drozd have remained the core members, with Coyne being the sole founding member after the departure of bassist and keyboardist Michael Ivins in 2021.

In the early days, The Flaming Lips released several albums and EPs under the indie label, Restless, garnering a dedicated following in the 1980s and early 1990s. A pivotal moment came when they signed with Warner Brothers and released Hit to Death in the Future Head in 1992, marking their debut with the major label. Their breakthrough into the mainstream came with the release of Transmissions from the Satellite Heart in 1993, featuring the hit single “She Don’t Use Jelly.”

The Flaming Lips continued to amaze the music world with their innovative and genre-blending albums. The Soft Bulletin, released in 1999, earned critical acclaim and was named NME magazine’s Album of the Year. The band’s incredible talent and creative prowess garnered them multiple Grammy Awards, including two for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Throughout their illustrious career, The Flaming Lips have left an indelible mark on the music industry. 

Never ones to shy away from experimentation, The Flaming Lips surprised fans in November 2021 with the release of an album featuring nine Nick Cave cover songs, recorded remotely during the COVID-19 lockdown, with the young Canadian musician Nell Smith.
