English glam-rock artist Declan McKenna is coming to town for a set at Lollapalooza on Friday. But first, he’ll be hitting The Bottom Lounge for an official Lollapalooza Aftershow performance. These shows come in the midst of McKenna’s 2023 North American tour, “The Big Return,” which features over 50 dates across the continent.
Hailing from Enfield, Greater London, Declan McKenna rose to prominence after he won Glastonbury Festival’s Emerging Talent Competition in 2015. The win earned him 5,000 euros and a highly sought after record contract with Columbia Records. Shortly before, he released his first single “Brazil,” which gained attention for its political commentary on the FIFA World Cup corruption scandal. His debut album, What Do You Think About the Car? was released two years later on July 21, 2017 to an outpouring of praise from critics, who commented on McKenna’s ability to talk about serious issues in a way that centers indie rock and delves deep in its lyrics.
Since his debut, McKenna has released another album, played music festivals, and headlined multiple tours. The artist has stated multiple times that he is inspired by ABBA and David Bowie, wanting to “emulate his career.” At only 24 years old, McKenna has set out on his second headlining tour with “The Big Return,” to promote his music, both new and old. Of his shows, McKenna is inspired by his younger self, asking “When 15-year-old Declan walks in the room to watch Declan on stage, how do we make it the craziest gig he’s ever seen?” The answer is with a metallic-adorned, electric performance every night onstage for crowds across the continent.
You can see Declan McKenna at his Lollapalooza Aftershow at The Bottom Lounge on August 3. Resale tickets are available here.
