Synth Pop singer Lido Pimenta is coming to Chicago as one of the few shows she is playing this summer. The Columbian Canadian artist is heading to Subterranean on July 27 for a set showcasing her art-pop style.
Pimenta is originally from Barranquilla, Columbia, but immigrated to Canada at an early age. Her breakthrough into the music industry came after her debut album, Color, which she released in 2010. The album was released with KUDETA and was praised for Pimenta’s songwriting and vocal quality. Pimenta planned to release her follow-up album in 2013, but took an unplanned hiatus in which she earned a degree in arts criticism, learned different production techniques, and took care of her family after her brother’s death. La Papessa was released in 2016, self-produced and released by Pimenta herself. For this album, she was awarded the 2017 Polaris Music Prize and gained prominence in the synthpop scene.
Pimenta’s latest album, Miss Columbia, was written and released in 2020, a time when the artist was feeling particularly inspired. The title refers to the incident at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant, when Steve Harvey mistakenly crowned Miss Columbia as the winner of the beauty competition. This altercation and its fallout led Pimenta to reflect on what it means to be Columbian and how to interact with the place you’re from. In her words, “… the floodgates opened, my head exploded, depression started, anxiety began… and now we have the album!”
The album she’s referring to is inspired by her own musings, as well as Colombian poetry and folklore. Miss Columbia is an emotional and transcendent experience that allows Lido Pimienta to fully explore the genres she is so talented and well versed in.
