Singer songwriter Ben Folds is coming to Chicago! Following the release of his most recent album, What Matter Most, Folds is setting out on an American tour in collaboration with different cities’ symphony orchestras. He will be stopping in Chicago on July 26 at Orchestra Hall with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Folds’ career spans decades. Originally from Greensboro, MC, Folds began playing piano at age nine, and devoted many hours throughout his childhood and adolescence perfecting his technique. The artist broke through with his band, Ben Folds Five, in 1995 with their self-titled debut album. The album and the band garnered mainstream success until 2000 when the members decided to work on solo projects.
In addition to his own work, Folds has also produced albums for other artists, such as William Shatner and Amanda Palmer. He has also contributed to soundtracks for the films Hoodwinked! and Over The Hedge. Always keeping a sense of humor, Folds has guest starred and cameoed as himself on various sitcoms and dramedies, and has a close friendship with Weird Al Yankavic himself.
As a solo act, Ben Folds has released four albums, the latest being What Matters Most. Folds has called this album his most true to date, commenting that “Sonically, lyrically, emotionally, I don’t think it’s an album I could have made at any other point in my career. The chamber pop album was never a planned endeavor for Folds, as he hadn’t released new music in eight years. But the singer-songwriter found that music was the best way to express the way he had felt over the pandemic and recent years. He has since said it’s his favorite album to date.
